Keeping Assessments Low Can Cost More
This episode features Janet Nelson CMCA, AMS from FirstService Residential. Janet is in a rare position to have experienced leadership from both the volunteer leader and professional manager sides of association management. In this episode, Janet shares a story from before her career as a community association manager, in her own association when she took on the role of President.
This self-managed association finds itself in a crisis amidst crises, with a major project that needs to be done and national catastrophes making things even more difficult. The roof on their building is months away from catastrophic failure and has two more layers than building code allows. Kicking the can down the road by deferring proper maintenance of the roof has finally caught up with them.
Janet, in her very first board meeting as President, needed to explain to her neighbors why a special assessment is necessary. Learn how this experience has shaped her perspective on community association management.
