Three years ago, when Todd Eichholz joined Bob Olson as co-owner of A&A Paving Contractors, the two men envisioned utilizing state-of-the-art technology and cutting-edge management concepts to reenergize a 55-year-old paving company and assure its stability for long-term success. Despite their age difference – Olson is 75 and Eichholz is 36 – it was clear the two had the same vision for the company. “We’ve been on the same page every step of the way,” says Todd.

“Our team says that we are like a brand new 55-year-old paving company,” Todd says.

Once they’d made some internal, operational improvements, Todd “really went after the marketing.” Some of the improvements were visible – an updated logo, cleaned and waxed trucks, a revitalized website, drone videos — but others, such as a change in approach to markets, were conceptual.

Possibly the most important marketing improvement was a shift from a blanket, one-size-fits-all approach to tailoring approaches to industry-specific markets such as industrial, retail, and homeowner associations. Todd feels that his property manager background provided insights that A&A is now putting to use, “I know the issues a property manager faces and what problems they have to solve; that’s why we work hard to provide solutions.”

And now they take the same approach for each type of customer. “We really learn about each different market and then go after what their pain points are,” Todd explains. “Once we learn their pain points, we know how to address them, and we even create videos that show that we understand and can address them.”

This growth is well beyond the industry average and has led to repeated national recognition.

This national recognition came most recently in August when A&A Paving Contractors won 2017 National Contractor of the Year Award from Pavement Maintenance & Reconstruction Magazine, winning out over 20,000 contractors nationwide. Just last month, Todd was recognized at the Daily Herald Business Ledger’s Entrepreneurial Excellence Awards in which he was honored in the Young Entrepreneurs Under 40 category, for his willingness to take risk, professional drive and business creativity.

Although Todd and Bob appreciate industry recognition, the real reward comes to A&A Paving with their employee dedication and their involvement within the community. As Todd explains,
“Life is bigger than building parking lots, our staff and clients are our team, and our model for success starts with a great culture – not just at work, but outside of work as well. We set aside time once a month for our staff to volunteer at local non-profit organizations. And our A&A family is all in!”

Todd further explains, “We believe true leadership is serving others, which means leading by example.” A&A Paving is involved with the Roselle Police Association Foundation, the Roselle Chamber of Commerce, and Willow Creek’s Global Leadership Summits.

A&A Paving Contractors, INc. has come a long way from its beginning in the 1960’s as a painting contractor, painting lines in parking lots. Now specializing in asphalt paving, sealcoating and concrete services, A&A Paving is an integral local business and community leader.
