President: Tim Haviland, CMCA® Tim Haviland currently serves as a Vice President and Commercial Loan Officer with Itasca Bank & Trust Co. Tim has over 15 years of commercial banking experience with a focus on the Chicago area Homeowner Association (HOA) industry since 2003. During 2004, Tim was named a Certified Manager of Community Associations (CMCA®) by the National Board of Certification for Community Association Managers. The CMCA® designation is awarded to community association professionals nationwide who have demonstrated the fundamental knowledge necessary to manage condominium, cooperative, and homeowner associations.
Tim is active in various industry events sponsored by the Community Associations Institute (CAI). He has published articles in Common Interest, the quarterly magazine for the Illinois Chapter of CAI. Tim was a host and frequent guest on Common Interest Radio, a weekly radio broadcast on WIND (AM 560), which featured homeowner association news and industry experts, sponsored by the Illinois Chapter of CAI from 2005 thru 2010. During 2008, he was presented with the Olympus Service Award, and previously with the 2005 Rising Star Award from the Illinois Chapter of CAI.
Tim was elected to the CAI-IL Board of Directors during 2009, and has served as Vice President of the Board since 2010. He was chairman of the CAI-Illinois Community Development Committee, and has served on numerous committees including the Membership Committee, the Radio Committee, and the Common Interest Magazine Committee.
President Elect: Erica R. Horndasch, CMCA®, AMS® Erica is a Community Manager at Wentworth Property Management a First Service Residential Management Company who works specifically onsite managing an active adult community. Erica has twenty years of property management experience. She has been active in Property and Community Management since the age of fifteen. Growing up in the industry, she has benefited from several real life situations that have awarded her the opportunity to share with the client and guide them in the right direction. She has a passion for management and looks at each day as a new challenge and an opportunity to enhance her customer service skills. Erica's career path has afforded her the opportunity to work with several local management companies and has also given her the opportunity to work with an association law firm as a paralegal and collection manager.
In 2011, Erica was presented with the "Olympus Service Award" by CAI-IL. In 2006 she received the "Rising Star" award and was named the 2006 recipient of the Robert W. McLallen "Property Manager of the Year" by CAI-IL. Erica was elected to the CAI-IL Board of Directors in 2008 and will serve as the Chapter President in 2013 for a one year term. She has been chair of the CAI-IL Conference and Exposition Committee for three years and has served on other committees including Membership and Awards.
Erica also serves as a Board President of a 645 unit HOA having experience not only as a manager, but as a Board member. Erica holds the designations of Certified Manager of Community Associations (CMCA®) and Association Management Specialist (AMS®) and continues her education in Association management.
Vice President: Don Kekstadt, AMS®, PCAM® Executive Vice President for Lieberman Management Services, Inc. Mr. Kekstadt has nineteen years of property management and maintenance experience. Don is a member of the Community Association Manger Licensing and Disciplinary Board for the State of Illinois. He is responsible for the overall management of approximately $3 billion dollars worth of real estate in the Chicagoland marketplace representing over 200 Associations, while being responsible for the retention and acquisition of new and existing clients. He also has a staff of over 80 Property Managers, 6 Regional Directors and a staff of 12 Resident Service Agents. Don is also a member of the LMS Executive Committee.
Treasurer: Steve Silberman, CPA Steve Silberman is an Officer and Director of the accounting and consulting firm, Frost, Ruttenberg and Rothblatt, P.C. Steve has provided accounting and consulting services to Community Associations since 1978 and currently provides services to over 300 Associations. Steve has been a presenter for numerous CAI educational programs as well as authored many articles for newsletters and magazines including Common Interest Magazine. He has also been a guest on Common Interest Radio. Steve also has been an active member of the CAI-Illinois Community Development Committee for the past four years.
Steve has been a CAI Board Member for the past three years and has been the Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee for the past two years.
Secretary: Mindy Maggio Mindy is a Commercial Lines Insurance Producer at Rosenthal Brothers Insurance. Her expertise lies in insuring Community Associations throughout Illinois and Wisconsin. Ms. Maggio provides her clients with insurance knowledge while at the same time builds long lasting relationships through excellent service. Mindy has 17 years of experience working with Community Associations. Before Mindy went into insurance she worked as a Property Manager.
Mindy has served on the CAI Board in the past, and was the Chapter's Board President in 2004. She received the CAI Illinois Recruiter of the Year awards in 2001 and 2004, and the Olympus award in 2007. Over the years she has worked on and chaired numerous committees. Currently, Mindy Chairs the Frank Jara Scholarship Fund, is a member of the CAI Conference & Exposition Committee and serves as Treasurer for a 215 unit HOA where she resides.
Lara Anderson Lara is an attorney and principal of the law firm of Fullett Rosenlund Anderson PC. Her practice is concentrated in all aspects of the representation of condominium, townhome, homeowner, cooperative and common interest community associations throughout Northern Illinois. Lara graduated with honors from Northern Illinois University with a B.S. in Accounting in 1989, passed the CPA exam and then graduated from Northern Illinois University's College of Law in 1992. In 1997, Lara became a Board Certified Forensic Accountant and has been retained as an expert witness in accounting in over 80 cases and has testified as an expert witness in both state and federal courts.
Lara began her legal career representing local, state and federal public officials and public entities as well as not-for-profit organizations in complex constitutional and civil rights matters before administrative agencies and in state and federal courts. She eventually transitioned her practice into representing just condominium, cooperative and common interest community associations. She has extensive litigation experience representing associations and has argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and the Indiana Supreme Court. Due to her reputation in the industry, she was asked to join a homeowners association's litigation team when it appealed a case to the Indiana Supreme Court. In that case, Villas West II v. McGlothin, 885 N.E.2d 1274 (2008), she convinced the Indiana Supreme Court to reverse the lower court and hold that the association's rental restriction did not violate the Fair Housing Act.
Lara is currently a board member and the Secretary of CAI-Illinois and a member of the Committee for Community Development for CAI-Illinois. She has authored numerous articles on association law issues and is frequently asked to speak before various groups on association matters. Lara has been a presenter at the last five CAI-Illinois Conventions and the 2009 CAI National Law Seminar held in California. She has also written numerous articles that have appeared in a variety of publications.
Kerry T. Bartell Kerry is a principal with the law firm of Kovitz Shifrin Nesbit and has been practicing with the firm since 1998. After graduating college from Northwestern University in 1995, she attended Chicago-Kent College of Law, graduating in 1998. She concentrates her practice in the area of condominium, homeowner and townhome association law. She frequently conducts seminars on community association law for homeowners, property managers and community associations in Chicago and the suburbs with CAI and has been a guest on Common Interest Radio. She is also a member of the Community Development Committee.
Julio Chinea Julio Chinea is a Regional Account Executive for Rose Paving Company, a leader in parking lot maintenance since 1974. Chinea has been an effective leader in the concrete and asphalt industry for over five years, assisting property managers and building owners in protecting their communities. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business & Communications from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and prides himself on building long-lasting relationships with his clients. He goes above and beyond with superior communication and service. Julio has been actively involved in CAI-Illinois since 2010, attending meetings, events, and tradeshows, while also serving on the membership committee. This is Julio's first year on the CAI-Illinois Board of Directors.
Michaelene Conrad, MIRM, CMCA®, AMS® Over the last 25 years Michaelene has been in the property management field. Due to her past experience being in real estate sales and volunteer service has made this industry a good fit. For the first ten years Michaelene worked as a property manager for several management companies. Her time with these companies brought her enough experience and insight to operate her own business for 16 years. Her company is MC Property Management Corp. which manages over 70 Associations consisting of over 6,000 units which encompasses condominiums, townhomes, homeowner associations and rental properties. These properties are located in the suburbs and the city.
Michaelene has earned her MIRM, CMCA® and AMS® designations and she is a member of CAI and ACTHA Associations. Michaelene has been a member of the Conference & Exposition Committee for multiple years and a speaker for CAI and ACTHA.
Diana R. Larson, AMS®, PCAM® Beginning her management career in 1991, as a Board President of a relatively small town home association, she decided to re-enter the work force as an administrative assistant for a small management company in the northwest suburban area. She then moved over to one of the largest management companies in the Chicagoland area advancing within the company to the position of Vice President, overseeing community association managers, personally managing associations & assisting the President in the day-to-day administration of the company.
In 2005, Diana joined the Homeowner Association Banking Group with Harris N.A., as Assistant Vice President and Relationship Manager, a specialty group providing capital improvement financing and related banking services to numerous condominium, townhome and other homeowner associations throughout the Chicagoland and Wisconsin areas.
In July 2010, Diana returned to the "management side of the industry table" as Director of Marketing for ALMA Property Management Services, Inc.
Diana has successfully completed courses within the Professional Management Development Program (PMDP), i.e., M-100, M-200 series, M-300 series & 2-day Case Study offered through CAI (Community Association Institute). She has earned & achieved the recognized designations of AMS (Association Management Specialists) & PCAM (Professional Community Association Manager), the highest designation possible within the industry. She currently serve on the CAI-Illinois Chapter Board of Directors, received the Rising Star Award from the CAI-Illinois Chapter in 2004 & 2007; received the Olympus Service Award in 2008; is the current Chairperson for the Directory Committee, as well as the Radio Committee, Co-Chair of the Program Committee and is an active member of the Community Development Committee for the CAI-Illinois Chapter. Most recently, Diana has been accepted as a member of the National Faculty Staff for CAI, teaching several of the M-200 PMDP Courses.
Thomas C. Engblom, CMCA®, AMS® Tom Engblom is a licensed instructor in Illinois and National Instructor for CAI. Tom is also a former National Business Council member for CAI. Tom has earned Certified Property Manager (CPM) and Professional Community Association Manager from Community Associations Institute (PCAM®). Tom managed or supervised a minimum of 3,500 units within Chicago and the suburbs.
Tom has over 30 years experience in Management and Banking for Association. Tom continues to provide consulting work for various professional organizations and legal firms, as well as achieving Vice President at Community Association Banc servicing Minnesota (CAI Board of Directors), Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan(CAI Board of Directors),, Kentucky and Ohio.
Carol Marcou, CMCA®, AMS® PCAM® Carol is a Senior Community Association Manager with Vanguard Community Management. Carol received her B.S. degree in business management from DePaul University in 1989 and worked through school as a legal assistant for a downtown Chicago law firm. Carol has been in the community association management business since 1991, starting out with her own small management company. Since that time, Carol has worked at various management companies and is currently a supervisor/senior manager at Vanguard. Carol has earned her CMCA®, AMS® and PCAM® designations. She has been an active member of CAI and has served on several committees during her career, including Trade Show Committee, Manager's Committee and ILAC.
John Saletta John has managed his own insurance agency with Allstate Insurance for 33 years. In 2000 his agency was merged into the Allstate Hallberg-Valek Insurance Agency where John continues to advise.
In 1998 John reinstituted the Homeowners Forum and chaired the forum until 2010.
He has been a member of CAI for over 25 years as a business partner and homeowner. Currently he resides as a homeowner at the Woods of South Barrington. John attended Loyola University majoring in marketing.
